Reporting Incidents on Roads

ONLY the police can act on a case of dangerous driving. NO ONE ELSE CAN. It is IMPORTANT you REPORT TO THE POLICE IN THE FIRST INSTANCE EVERY TIME

We also advise that when reporting an incident to the police of dangerous driving, make sure you ask for the incident number to enable you to chase up with the police if necessary.

Please use the button below to find your portal in your area. Please also continue reading down the page for more information on reporting.

Not enough has been done since the review of the Highway Code in 2022 to promote the new guidelines advising of safe passing of equestrians on the road.

Drivers are getting away from killing and injuring horses and riders due to the fact there are no laws

Horses and their riders are still being killed or injured as has been seen in the recent BHS stats which sadly are not an accurate figures, as research shows that only 56% of incidents are logged on the app.

Research also shows that not enough people are reporting incidents of dangerous driving to the police only 44% are. This should be the priority of any equestrian!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU WANT TO REPORT A CASE OF DANGEROUS DRIVING BY A MOTORIST

Please follow the steps in order and remember only the police can act. The BHS app is for stats only.

1) Report to police either via their website for submitting video evidence or 101 (if reporting via 101 ask for an incident number, many police forces will do everything they can not to give you a number but stand firm be polite and insist)

2) Check with police if you have to remove any videos from social media

3) Make sure you keep an unedited version of any video evidence, and it needs to be 2 minutes on either side of the incident

4) Ensure that YOU have adhered to the highway code up to, during, and after the incident

5) Gain as much evidence as you can yourself, i.e., photographs of where the incident took place, other cctv footage if available, etc. as the police will not always do this type of investigation.

6) Log on BHS incident site (note we have checked, and they do not have the capacity to store videos)

If you are unhappy with the response from the police

1) Put in an official complaint to the police If you are still unhappy with the response from the police

2) Contact your police commissioner
